Which Kurdish Dialect (Sorani/Kurmanji) is More Useful for Travel in Iraqi Kurdistan?

Languages
I'm heading to Iraqi Kurdistan soon and I'm really keen to learn some basic Kurdish phrases. I know there are two main dialects, Sorani and Kurmanji, and I'm quite confused about which one would be more beneficial to focus on for general communication in cities like Erbil or Sulaymaniyah. Any insights or recommendations on which dialect to prioritize for a beginner would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there! Awesome you're heading to Iraqi Kurdistan, it's a fantastic place.

Okay, so for Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, you'll definitely want to focus on Sorani. That's the main dialect spoken in those cities and pretty much all of central and southern Iraqi Kurdistan. Kurmanji is more common up north, like around Duhok, and also in Turkish and Syrian Kurdistan.

So yeah, if your goal is to chat with folks in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, Sorani is your best bet by far. Even just a few basic phrases will go a long way and people will really appreciate the effort. Have an amazing trip!
